New full color magazine documenting our tours(08.29.08)
Ryan Schierling, the photographer that went on our last two tours, has published a full color, 56 page magazine documenting life on the road for us. Below is a description he sent with a link to browse it and buy if anyone is interested. We were really privileged to have such a professional photographer (and great guy) with us on the road. On another note - Tonight we are playing The Tractor in Ballard, so if you feel like going out you know where we will be. We go on around 10 pm. Have a great Labor Day weekend and hope all is well! ~Chris ************************************************************************  Twenty years ago, I made magazines. Well, little magazines. We just called them 'zines. They were xeroxed – filled with photographs and writing about whatever it was we were doing back then, usually skateboarding and BMX and lamenting about girls – and often traded via mail with other like-minded teenagers in far-flung parts of the country. It was an incredible creative outlet and I met a lot of interesting people. I've still got a stack of 'zines from the late '80s in the closet – with some notables being Stapled and Xeroxed Paper by Spike Jonze, Aggro Rag by Mike Daily, Marcel Marceau's Speech Therapist by Nor-Cal Swami Scott Davidson and Disobedience by Alberto Kroeger. But self-publishing a full-color, high-quality magazine hasn't ever really been an option. Until now. Go Away Come Home is a 56-page visual retrospective of my 2007 and 2008 summer tours with Seattle band Spanish For 100. Five weeks of shooting. A month of editing. Two weeks of magazine layout. Two blind- drunk days of wondering whether or not this was a good idea. After having lived on a hard drive and/or strips of black-and-white negatives for the last year, it's good to finally have given these images a home. Copies are available here. Finally, a day where the modern conveniences and technologies that we have grown so accustomed to, can finally be put to use. In case you were thinking of telecommuting from somewhere in far eastern Montana or anywhere in North Dakota, forget about it. While I can appreciate the stark beauty that presents itself at times, the connectivity leaves something to be desired. Walked around the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis this afternoon, checking out Twin Town guitars in the process. It was a fantastic afternoon weatherwise, and a good day to not be cooking in the dutch-oven-like confines of our bus ('Horchata' for those not in the know). Been an interesting first couple of days, as it always is, getting out to the Midwest. It seems such a simple pedestrian task to point a vehicle east and press firmly down on the gas pedal, but the realities of travel in a 55mph converted Handicap transit bus make for an adventure, whether the destination is across town, or across the country. First, there is no "going unnoticed". Simply impossible to not be noticed, unless the observer in question was both blind and deaf. People really do openly stare, and in small towns, such as our experience last night in Jamestown N.D., people start asking questions. Usually innocent ones, but they inevitably lead to conversations. Touring isn't for the painfully shy. Our first show in Missoula was good if sparsely attended (being a Sunday and all) and after a quick jaunt to Bozeman we played a raucous set for the folks at The Filling Station with fellow Seattle band Little Pieces. Herman from Little Pieces hails from Bozeman and there was a nice friendly crowd to take in the scene. The rest of the drive has been...well a drive. Too many words escape me at this stage of sleep deprivation, but I will try and post a few pictures from our friend/Photographer and two time SPF100 tour veteran Ryan Schierling. After that, a hastily consumed energy drink and then back in the drivers seat to put a few hours in toward Chicago. Thanks to The Oswald Effect for having us on the bill. Our next show is at the Comet in May and then in June we hit the road again. The new album is coming along well. It sounds fantastic. Corey to Portugal, Chief Bromden to lay down Tracks(01.30.08)  Morning Spaniards! Corey is about to fly the coop for a couple of weeks, leaving us to tackle some sweet juicy guitar tracks at 3210 studio and Chateau Crumpler. Doing the honors on the six string will be none other than Chief Bromden, of the long defunct "The Chief Bromden Experience" We hear he's Ace on the guitar. When he's on his meds. Mostly. Cheers! -R Tracking at Jupiter(01.29.08) Today is Tuesday. They said it was going to snow last night and as I awoke occasionally with the wind my doubts mounted. Mostly though it is good to say that I miss the snow and how it used to make a new mood, a new chance. We finished tracking the bass and drums yesterday at Jupiter studios. I guess you could say we are off to the races with our fourth record. This one is shaping up to be something very special. And there was something restful in me as the songs came and went and we picked our sounds and our way through the lists and notes packed into the margins. Maybe I am at ease. Maybe I know something.... I will try to keep you posted on how it goes from here as we track the guitars and vocals between the drafty, fir-clad walls of barns lost in fir forests, as we set microphones in the bowels of a wooden schooner as it hucks and dips in forty-foot seas with lighting wrecking the mast. I will try to tell you about shielding off vipers as we tune our guitars and in the swelter of an unknown South-Pacific island, and lay down harmonies in bitter, deathly chill of remote villages in the Himalayas. I will try to tell it as it is. I will try to bring you in.
